Currently Car26 and Wandin CFA

Car26 officially began operations in 2003 after two years of work by the Ranges Community Health Services and volunteers. The program was set up in response to community concern after tragically 26 teenagers were killed on Yarra Ranges roads in 2000. Monbulk Blue Light has been running the project since 2004 taking in teenagers between the ages of fifteen and up to twenty-one years old.
Car26, using a mentoring model, involves the participant group in restoration of cars so that they acquire skills and knowledge of car repair, road safety, safe driving, and the risks involved with underage drinking and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The program runs for 20 weeks, usually the length of two school terms.
What is Car26?
Car26 provides a well-equipped automotive workshop where small groups of young people have the opportunity to learn about safe workshop practices and the basics of vehicle maintenance and a comprehensive introduction to how a car works.
The program will also focus on the responsible use of vehicles and drug and alcohol education and their adverse effect on road safety. Typically a night will consist of one hour’s theory followed by two hours of supervised hands on work.
Visits are made to a panel beaters and a professional automotive workshop, with the possibility of extended excursions to other places of automotive interest such as private car collections and truck manufacturers. Qualified guest speakers on road safety, drug awareness and other relevant subjects are programmed in as available.
We are fortunate to have a number of enthusiastic, trained volunteers, each bringing many years of experience in automotive maintenance to the Car26 program. All volunteers are police checked every year as part of Monbulk Blue Light policy.
When?
Car26 takes place on a Wednesday night between 6:30 and 9 pm during each school term, starting on the first Wednesday night of the new term.
Where?
Car26 is located at the rear of 115 Old Emerald Road (the corner of Old Emerald and Macclesfield Roads), about 2 km from the centre of Monbulk.
Cost?
The Car26 course is free; however a donation of $1 per night helps cover the cost of insurance.
How do I enrol or express my interest?
